Nigeria: Yabatech Alumni to Raise N200m

Lagos — Yaba College of Technology Alumni Association has instituted the launching of a N200 million development fund for the provision of infrastructure on the campus.

Briefing the press recently in Lagos, president of the association, Chief Emmanuel Unachukwu said the asociation has set for itself the task of raising the fund for the construction of a well equipped computer centre, for the study of computer science, and an alumni multi-purpose conference centre were conferences, seminars, and wedding receptions could be held.

While acknowledging that the project is not an easy one, Unachukwu assured that the association is determined to construct a befitting centre in the college which would serve the social and recreational needs of the community. He said when operational, the proceeds from the centre will provide the assocation with the much needed funds to continue to assist the College.

He added that the association is not content with living on past glory. It is rather determined to make its own contribution towards the growth of knowledge in the college. To this end, members are making tremendous sacrifices in giving freely of their time, energy and money.

"We do not want to be a ceremonial alumni association only seen on campus during convocation ceremonies. The work we are about to start, and determined to complete, will he a lasting testimony to the tenacity and sacrifice of a few individuals who are prepared to work towards higher ideals," He stated.

He said YABATECH has remained the college of first choice amongst Polytechnic Joint Admissions and Matriculation (JAMB) candidates and the alumni association would want to assist the College to maintain its premier position among other institutions.

He said government grants these days are nothing to write home about as they hardly meet the needs of the College in the area of recurrent expenditure not to talk of capital projects. "We have decided therefore to come to the aid of our alma mater."

He however, appealed to all members of the association, scattered all over the country to come together in order to achieve the noble objective. He also called on industralist and bankers to rise up and support the development of education in the college, saying that, there is hardly any sector of the economy that has not been impacted positively by the products of college.

In his response, the Rector, Mr. Olubunmi Owoso said he was overwelmed by the gesture of the association, adding that the demostration shows that the college zwould continue to be the leading institution in the country.

He prayed that the target of the association would be met.
