Nimba County — The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Information, Culture & Tourism (MICAT) has reportedly ordered the closure of all amateur radio stations in Nimba County.
The stations, according to the "closure order dated Nov. 1, 2002 under the signature of Information Minister Reginald Goodridge, mandated all local government authorities, including the police and other security detachments, to effect the closure order in the county.
According to the order, the government noted that it has come to her attention that a large number of FM radio stations are "operating illegally" throughout the country without proper authorization and license.
These illegal operations, the government observed, "pose a threat to national security."
The Ministry of Information, the communication said, is therefore under instruction to arrest the situation by closing down all FM radio stations termed "illegal" in the county.
In keeping with the order, the Assistant Information Minister Walequoi Varlai and the Director for National Communication, Emmanuel D.S. Todd, effected the closure of four "illegal" FM stations in Ganta, Nimba County.
Radio stations affected by the exercise were Victory FM, the Ganta Broadcasting System (GBS), the YMCA-Royal FM station and the Ganta Power 'GG FM station.
Meanwhile, the police and all security detachments in the country have been ordered to keep an eye on the closed stations, lest they reopen or violate the closure order.
