Uganda: Arua to Process Honey for Export

Kampala — A private enterprise, Bee Natural Products (BNP) has set up a honey processing plant in Arua town to produce honey for export.

The company's managing director, Mario Dido, Nov. 12 said production is expected to kick off in January next year when honey harvesting season starts.

She said although some of the honey would be consumed here, they are mainly targeting European markets.

"The total investment in this region (West Nile) will cost us about $600,000," she said in an interview with The Monitor Nov 12.

She said by December they would have established collection centres in Nebbi, Moyo, Arua, Adjumani and Yumbe.

Dido said they would sensitise beekeepers on quality requirements and provide them with equipment.

She said they would provide airtight leak-proof buckets and protective gear like smokers, hive knives and boots in terms of loans to the farmers to enable them collect sufficient honey.

The government is expected to provide stainless steel storage and export buckets.
