Uganda: Year of Harvest

Kampala — AS WE enter 2003, it is refreshing for once to look towards a year that promises more harvest and less frustration. The past 17 years of Movement rule have seen a lot of struggle and sacrifice. Today, the country's future looks clearer than ever before and though we must keep working harder, there are many reasons to smile.

For the first time, all the children in

primary schools are sponsored by

the government, except those whose parents prefer to keep them in private schools. There is no child of school going age who is illiterate, unless by misguided choice of the parents and guardians.

Besides developing a literate and

the country has gone a long way in protecting the health of its citizens through immunisation against child killer diseases and curbing the spread of HIV.

This is also a year of choices, as ordinary Ugandans will get more chances to invest their money in profitable enterprises that are professionally managed. Shares of The New Vision for instance are expected on the stock exchange. The nearly completed elimination of LRA rebels will open up opportunities for investment and recovery in the Acholi sub region

The regional and diplomatic fronts look even more rosy. The peaceful change of government in Kenya means the East African Community will grow from strength to strength. The improved relations with Sudan and Congo will ensure that we can now exchange goods and services and not waste resources in conflict. Let everybody seize this conducive atmosphere and improve their lot.
