Kampala — The district director of health services, Dr. Albert Okwir, said about 33 other people were infected with the disease.
Okwir told The New Vision that 17 people were recently admitted to Bwera hospital.
He said a medical team was deployed to handle the situation.
"The situation is getting out of hand," Okwir said from Bwera hospital, about 70km west of Kasese town and seven miles from the common border.
He attributed the upsurge on the poor hygiene on the Congo side, saying over 80% of the infections were from there.
"These Congolese are depleting our resources and our staff. We need urgent assistance. We are even planning to pitch camp on the Congo side to try and fight the problem from there," he said.
Okwir said the ministry of health had sent some supplies. They were, however, insufficient, he said.
Bwera sub-county councillor William Talyakabuya said some of the new cases were from the sub-counties of Karambi and Ihandiro along the common border. Ends
