Kampala — Local telecommunications company, uganda telecom, has made it possible for "every landline to be an internet line."

This new product was yesterday presented to the public by Askan Schmeisser, the marketing and sales manager at Rwenzori Courts in Kampala. He said it will be called the "freenet" service.

"freenet is a service that enables every uganda telecom landline to immediately access the internet without a registration or the payment of subscription fees," Schmeisser said.

"This means that every uganda telecom customer can immediately access the internet from his computer wherever. The customer does not have to contact anybody of any company in order to get the internet," Schmeisser added.

He explained that freenet is free of registration, free of set-up costs, free of subscription fees and free of contacts.

He said the service is as cheap as a local call and it is available 24-hours a day anywhere in Uganda.

The ISP/Data Infrastructure manager, Michael Magambo demonstrated how to set up the internet through the dial-up connection.

He said in order access the freenet service, landline customers just need to set up their computer and modem and dial 0400-1000, enter the username: freenet and the password: freenet and then proceed to surf the web.

"With this service, uganda telecom is again leading the way and contributing in a major extent to the accessibility of the internet in Uganda," Schmeisser said. He said in May 2002, the firm introduced a special internet tariff countrywide.
