Kampala — Mbarara

Prof. Richard Kasawuli of the National Agriculture Research Organisation, Kawanda, has said according to Uganda Export Promotion Board, the Dutch want 10 tonnes of moringa from Uganda per month.

"The Dutch would buy each kilogramme of moringa at $40. At the moment, because of very little production, moringa is consumed locally at sh30,000 per kilogramme," he said.

The chairman of Karera Farmers Group, Sheema in Bushenyi, Rajab Nsubuga Mukasa, said, at the moment President Museveni is the biggest single farmer with 60 acres at Kisozi farm in Gomba. Crispus Kiyonga follows with 25 acres in Kasese and John Nagenda has also managed to plant three acres of Moringa.

According to sources the small trees are the source of ben nut oil. The roots of a newly planted moringa tree can be harvested after 10 years.
