Nigeria: Lack of Funds Halts Project to Save Forests

Failure of Federal Government to provide required counterpart funds since year 2000, has brought to a halt, a UNESCO project designed to reduce deforestation in Nigeria.

The UNESCO project tagged Renewable Energy to Save Forests, used one Pilot Centre, in Okopedi, Abia State and another in Zakkar, Katsina State, as pioneer test cases in promoting ways of cooking without heavy use of fire woods which account for 50 per cent deforestation activities of Nigerians via wood-logging.
