South Africa: Driefontein Fire

Johannesburg 31 January 2003: The management of Gold Fields Limited regrets to report that four employees lost their lives as a result of gas inhalation following a fire at the No 7 Shaft West of the Driefontein gold mine near Carletonville.

Management expresses its sincerest condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the deceased. Measures have been put in place to assist the bereaved families through this trying time and to ensure that the appropriate support is available to them. In addition to the lump-sum and pension benefits that the families will receive, Gold Fields also has in place a special educational programme to asssist the dependant children of the deceased to complete their education. The names of the deceased will be made known as soon as their families have been informed.
