Nairobi — Tension reigned high in Dandora Estate yesterday after police gunned down a member of a suspected Mungiki gang that attacked a bus.
The slain Mungiki adherent is the fourth sect member to be killed by police after members of the outlawed sect hacked two police officers and set their bodies ablaze last Wednesday.
Heavily armed police officers manned all matatu termini as ordered by the Provincial Police Officer, Stephen Kimenchu and the Provincial Commissioner, Mr Cyrus Maina, last week.
The duo declared that only matatu crew who show proof of employment will be allowed at matatu stages and any criminal will be arrested or shot if they defy the order.
According to Buru Buru Divisional Criminal Investigations Officer, Sebastian Ndaru, "A five-man gang armed with pangas and other crude weapons were challenged to stop by police officers but instead one of them attacked the officers with a panga. He was gunned down by police in self defence."
Ndaru confirmed that police recovered the panga and snuff from the slain suspect.
Heavily armed police officers led by the Buru Buru Police boss patrolled the area in two Toyota Land Cruiser pick-up vehicles the whole day. Some officers also pitched camp at the notorious 'Stage 41' where Mungiki and Kamjesh goons have been operating an illegal extortion racket.
Meanwhile, matatu and bus operations continued normally after police assured residents that there was adequate security in the area.
Ten more Mungiki suspects were arrested by police during night patrols bringing the number of those arrested to 158.
