Uganda: LRA Hold Rally in Gulu

Kampala — REBELS of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) on Tuesday addressed a rally at Paibona Primary School, Awach sub-county, Aswa county in Gulu district and advised the people to co-operate with them.

Awach sub-county LC5 councillor D.J. Komakech said the rebels ordered residents to give them food and other necessities during the cease-fire ordered by their leader Joseph Kony.

Komakech said over 60 residents were forced to attend the rally from 4:00pm till midnight.

He added that the rebels said they would not carry out abductions, killings and attacks on the civilian population, vehicles and UPDF positions.

Military sources based in the north, however, said the rebels were violating their own cease-fire by attacking civilians and government positions.

The UPDF 4th Division spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said the rebels killed several people including civilians and UPDF soldiers and abducted over 40 people since they declared the cease-fire.
