Uganda: Accept Ceasefire, Says EU

Kampala — THE European Union has added its voice to urge the Government to accept a ceasefire declared by LRA leader Joseph Kony.

Sigurd Illing, the EU head of delegation, said yesterday that Kony's declaration of a ceasefire at the weekend was encouraging.

The British High Commissioner, Adam Wood, on Wednesday also called on the Government to respond positively to the cease-fire.

In a statement distributed yesterday to participants attending the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) at the International Conference Centre, Illing said the EU was encouraged by Kony's decision.

He asked the LRA to name their peace negotiating team that would meet the Government team.

Illing, who was not present at the conference said, "The EU and the international community can play a role in resolving the conflict. Although the EU does not specialise in mediation, it can be present in the process of negotiation."

The conference is jointly organised by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), United Nations Association (UNA)-Uganda and UNA- Denmark.

However, President Yoweri Museveni told a press conference at State House Nakasero on Wednesday that he would not accept Joseph Kony's unilateral declaration of a ceasefire. He said Kony should abide by the terms laid down by the Government last August.

Illing said EC was willing to provide substantial funding for the implementation of the long-term recovery plan for northern Uganda.

The UN Secretary General's Special Representative to the Great Lakes, Prof. Ibrahim Fall, in his address said the situation in the region was complex and needed a concerted effort by all the countries.Ends
