Nairobi — Catholic Archbishop Ndingi Mwana a'Nzeki yesterday censured a Catholic nun for expressing views favouring abortion at an international conference.
Ndingi, together with Sr Elizabeth Achieng, who is the Superior General of the Little Sister of St Francis to which the nun belongs, said the comments about were not the position of the church.
Sr (Professor) Anne Nasimiyu Wasike of the Little Sisters of St Francis based in Nairobi is reported to have made comments favouring abortion at a conference in Addis Ababa on Monday.
The comments were reportedly aired by the BBC and other international media stations covering the conference.
Yesterday, Ndingi and Sr Achieng said in a statement that the views expressed by Sr Wasike who is professor at the Kenyatta University concerning abortion were completely against the position of the church.
The two further cautioned that the reference Sr Wasike made to the Vatican Council about the same matter was misleading.
Ndingi and Sr Achieng said abortion was illegal and criminal.
Separately, Pope John Paul II has appointed Bishop Boniface Lele of Kitui to administrate the Catholic Diocese of Machakos following the continued ill health of Bishop Urbanus Kioko.
Bishop Lele will only assist in apostolic administration while he remains the Bishop of Kitui Diocese.
The Apostolic Nunciature in Kenya yesterday said Bishop Kioko has been experiencing ill health for several months since last year hindering him from discharging his Episcopal duties in the diocese.
According to the Nairobi-based Catholic Information Service for Africa (Cisa), Bishop Lele has already met all the priests in the diocese.
