Johannesburg — IN THE end, SA's last gasp attempt to play the role of peacemaker by advising the Iraqi regime on arms control came to nothing. It was too late.

But to the end, Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad insisted that any action with a chance of bringing about peace was worthwhile. Pahad denied vehemently that SA was attempting to play an intermediary role.
