Everybody has a stake in affirming a human rights culture, and it depends on a collective commitment. But none has a more important role than the 11 men and women of the Human Rights Commission. How are they doing?

Last month, a prisoner in an unnamed South African jail got in touch with the Human Rights Commission because of a difference of opinion with the prison authorities over the medicine he was taking for sinusitis.
