Nairobi — The week-long Aids symposia were concluded yesterday with the Presbyterian Church of East Africa strongly opposing the use of condoms as a preventive measure.
The Moderator of the PCEA General Assembly, the Right Rev Dr Jesse Kamau, said: "We shall not teach our people to use the wrong method to fight the enemy. Even if you use four condoms, your life still hangs in the balance."
Dr Kamau said the church stood for abstinence for unmarried people and faithfulness among married couples.
The meetings kicked off on Monday after the new campaign against Aids was launched by President Kibaki on Sunday.
All Christian churches that have been involved in the discussions have opposed the use of condoms while Muslims advocate their use within marriage. The others are the Anglican Church of Kenya, the Methodist Church and the Catholic Church.
Dr Kamau advised members to voluntarily go for testing and counselling as a way of overcoming stigma, especially for those intending to marry.
"Most NGOs are merchants of death. They write beautiful proposals but after getting money, it is their interests first," Mrs Ngilu said.
She was accompanied by the Director of Medical Services, Dr Richard Muga. The workshop was also addressed by the PCEA Secretary General Rev Patrick Rukenya.
Mrs Ngilu said she would organise similar meetings next week with trade unions, to find ways of fighting the scourge.
