Lusaka — WE don't want political activities during the Kuomboka traditional ceremony, said Western Province deputy minister Simasiku Namakando yesterday.

Namakando disclosed that there had been 100 per cent room occupancy at all the hotels and guest houses in Mongu, forcing rates to go up. He said he wanted the people across political affiliation to enjoy themselves in a peaceful and conducive atmosphere.

"We want peace in the province, we don't want politics because this event unites the people. We are expecting a lot of people and I want them to enjoy the celebrations," Namakando said. "We are ensuring that peace prevails and I wish to welcome everybody." Namakando said some police officers had been deployed from other districts in the province to ensure that there was order and peace during the most celebrated traditional ceremony in the country.

He said all the guest houses and hotels were fully occupied about 10 days ago with adjusted room rates. "The cheapest guest house room was K40,000 but you will find that these have been increased to K80,000. Generally, the prices of commodities have gone up," Namakando said.

"Some local businessmen are making makeshift provisions for tourists who are still arriving." Namakando said all the logistics were in place for tomorrow's event. "The whole Western Province is involved in the organisation and we are expecting more people than last year because publicity has been good. The water levels are also better compared to last year," he said.

Namakando said more traditional rulers, politicians and Church leaders had confirmed their attendance of the event. He said Vice-President Enoch Kavindele who was expected in Barotseland this morning would grace the ceremony.
