Uganda: Acholi Deaths to Continue - LRA

Kampala — THE Lord's Resistance Army Deputy Commander, Vincent Otti, on Saturday said the Acholi would continue to die if they supported the Government's stand that the peace contact zone be Lapul sub-county, Aruu county in Pader district only.

Dennis Ojwee and Joyce Namutebi write that Otti was speaking on Mega FM in Gulu.

Lt. Gen. Salim Saleh, a member of the Presidential Peace Team, on Friday said Bishop Mackleod Ochora had invited Otti for the radio talk show.

Panelists on the show included Saleh, Gulu LC5 chief Lt. Col. Walter Ochora, Gulu district Movement committee boss, Charles Odora Oryem and the Gulu assistant resident district commissioner, Semei Okwir.

Otti said the places for the cease-fire should be spread throughout the northern region, not only Lapul, or Kitgum or Gulu districts.

"If (the Government) wants the peace negotiation team to be at Lapul sub-county only, it will not work. They should listen to our proposals to have the meeting take place in other areas in northern Uganda like Lira, Adjumani, Kitgum, Minakulu in Apac and so on," he said.

Saleh advised Otti and his group to get permits from the peace team, which would guarantee them free movement to different places in northern Uganda.

Without these, he said, there were chances that the rebels would mix with other armed people like the Bolkech, a gang of robbers that terrorises the northern region.

Saleh said he had explained the ceasefire issue to Otti. He said he had stressed that all he wanted was for the rebels to tell the team their way forward. They had to select their own people whose movement would not be restricted, he said.

He said the rebels had not shown commitment to their ceasefire. He said after Kony declared the proclaimed ceasefire, the rebels had killed more people. Ends
