Angola: Some 14.000 Measles Cases Recorded Annually

Luanda — Some 14.000 cases of measles are recorded annualy in Angola on Monday here disclosed the Health Minister, Albertina Hamukuaia, during the opening cermony of the national vaccination campaign against this disease.

The act was witnessed by the Angolan Head of State, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, and his wife, Ana Paula dos Santos, who symbolically opened the campaign, giving Vitamin A to two students of Cazenga's school complex.

She regarded Today (Monday) as very important day, as country is already in an environment of peace, and called on all society to engage at the campaign against this sickness which affects children's life.

On her turn, Unicef Director, Carol Bellamy, said that three decades of war placed Angola with one of the biggest infantile death-rate all over the world.

For her, the national campaign against measles is a touching starting, not only due to its ambitious achieving, but also because it is an affirmation that the key to build a fair and peacefull world is the investment in the field of health, nutrition and children education.

On his turn, World Health Organziation Director of programmes for Africa, Luis Sambo, the presence of the Angolan Head of State, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, in this act is the unequivocal demonstration of the national authorities participation at the prevention and fighting against great endemics in Angola.

Government officials, members of diplomatic body, representatives of the Un agencies, churches, among others, witnessed the ceremony.
