Nigeria: 3 Killed, 5 Arrested in Ilorin Violence

Ilorin — Three people celebrating the victory of Dr. Bukola Saraki, in the governorship elections, were killed while five suspects have been arrested following a shooting incident which broke out after the announcement of the election result, the State Police Commissioner, Alh. Mohammed Dikko Abubakar said in Ilorin yesterday.

Fielding questions after the shooting, the police boos also described that several others have been admitted in hospital following the post-election crisis which erupted at Ajikobi compound, Ilorin.

Alhaji Mohammed who appealed to the people of the state to be patient, said the police appreciated their good conduct in the elections and pledged that while full investigation has begun, the police would guarantee the security of lives and property.

Among those arrested over the incident was Surajudeen Akaje, declared wanted for arson and murder by the police, while four others are yet to be apprehended.

Daily Trust confirmed from the parent of one of the deceased, Kadiri Mashood that the children trooped out to celebrate the victory of Dr. Bukola Saraki, round the Ajikobi quarters when some armed men opened fire on the crowd throwing confusion into the area after three people mostly underaged were shot dead.

Meanwhile, the state police command said in Ilorin that 51 people who were arrested between April 12 and 19 for electoral and criminal offences would be charged in court soon.
