Namibia: Rains Dry Up, Leaving Dam Water Levels Low

NAMIBIA'S rainfall season has now officially ended, but the water levels of dams across the country remain poor.

The Windhoek-based Weather Bureau recently announced that, with the start of winter, the rainfall season has ended.

Weatherman Odilo Kgobetsi said Namibia's final rainfall season ends in April.

In its latest weekly dam bulletin, Namibia's water utility, NamWater, said the Von Bach dam, which provides water to the capital, has recorded a water level of only 30,4 per cent of full capacity - below the reading this time last year.

Last season the dam contained 49,2 per cent of its capacity.

The Goreangab dam outside Windhoek is at 77,9 per cent of full capacity, compared to 96,8 per cent last season.

Water levels at the Daan Viljoen Dam are also not looking good.

According to NamWater, the dam has recorded only 1,5 per cent of full capacity while last season it was at 20,4 per cent.

The Hardap dam outside Mariental is at 55,4 per cent of full capacity, well below last season's 85,6 per cent.
