Namibia: Serious Water Shortage At Uuvudhiya

OSHAKATI - The Regional Councillor for the Uuvudhiya constituency in the OshanaRegion says his area is staring a serious water shortage in the face.

Speaking to Nampa on Friday, Amutenya Ndahafa said farmers would be forced to move to where water is available unless NamWater starts pumping water from the Etaka Canal, near Ruacana.

He said farmers from all the constituency's grazing areas have moved close to Eengombe, which is the only lake currently providing animals with water.

Because of poor rainfall this year, other lakes in the constituency such as Ponona, Niiwengendje and Inakuu Yomadhiya have dried up.

"These are the lakes which used to supply watr for animals and sometimes for human consumption in the constituency," Ndahefa said, adding that without these water resources, NamWater's immediate intervention "is a must".

He said that other measures that could be taken to alleviate the water shortage included a water pipeline to the constituency's grazing area.
