Zambia: Litunga Backs Mwanawasa

27 May 2003

The Litunga in Western Province has pledged to support President Levy Mwanawasa's crusade against corruption.

Litunga Lamboyela Makwibi of Muoyo in Senanga district said she and her subjects were ready to fight corruption along side the Government.

She said Government should not relent in arresting all those who plundered or are suspected of having plundered the nation's economy.

The Litunga Lamboyela Makwibi said the plundered resources should be ploughed back into the national economy.

She was speaking when Education Deputy Minister Paul Katema paid a courtesy call on her yesterday.

"We are prepared to fight corruption with the New Deal Government and we are hoping that we will retrieve whatever was stolen from the national treasury, " she said.

And Mr Katema reaffirmed Government's commitment to work with traditional rulers in developing the nation which had lost a lot of resources in the last regime.

Mr Katema said the New Deal administration's commitment to work with traditional rulers was manifested in its plans to soon re-open the House of Chiefs.

Last week, Mr Katema visited Lubosi Imwiko (the Litunga) at his Limulunga palace in Mongu district.

And Government has urged teachers in Zambia to sacrifice in the quest to enhance the educational standards in the nation.

Mr Katema said Government might not meet all the needs of the teachers due to lack of financial resources and hence the need to develop a spirit of sacrifice to teach in any school around Zambia.

Mr Katema implored teachers and other stakeholders to appreciate Government's efforts meant to improve the conditions of service among educationists.

"Where we cannot provide, workers should bear with us but we are trying our best to make conditions of service for teachers competitive with those pertaining in other countries," he said.

He observed that citizens could only achieve development through hard work and sacrifice.

Mr Katema is on tour of Western Province where he is visiting developmental programmes and projects sponsored by various financial agencies in conjunction with Government.-- Zana
