Nairobi — AFRICAN COUNTRIES are sharply divided on the issue of eliminating
agricultural subsidies in developed countries, even after agreeing on the
need to speak with one voice at international trade negotiations.
During the recently concluded Common Market for East and Southern Africa
(Comesa) meeting where Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki pleaded for a united
front on trade matters, some of the trade negotiators privately said the
issue was too contentious to be settled easily.
