Ghana: Money-Loving Pastors Under Fire

Konongo — The General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), Reverend Dr. Aboagye-Mensah, has described "money-doubling" by some pastors as unchristian.

He has therefore called on the general public to thoughtfully study the Bible and understand it to be able to differentiate between the good and the bad pastors.

Rev. Dr. Aboagye-Mensah was speaking on LUV FM, a Kumasi-based radio station during its morning show "Luv In the Morning" programme monitored on Tuesday by The Chronicle in Konongo.

He said asking people to pay money before praying for them is ungodly. "It largely depends on us to shun them for the Bible says, "test all spirits to know the good ones".

He advised the public to avoid the charlatans posing as men of God because "if you don't go to them, they can't take advantage of you".

He revealed that he had heard of some pastors who had stolen cars in Europe and shipped them to Ghana, culminating in their being declared wanted.

Rev. Dr. Aboagye-Mensah explained that those who go to church to have their financial and material needs met fall victims because the devil takes advantage of that to dupe them.

He said that because "the one-man church" category does not belong to any of the groups of churches, no one can sanction them when they misbehave.

When asked whether an enactment of a law to regulate the activities of pastors is helpful, he cited an example from the Ivory Coast where by law, one must declare which group of churches he belongs to before one can set up a church.

The general secretary said under the erstwhile PNDC regime, the CCG opposed the registration of churches because it was going to gag them.

He indicated that the CCG, Ghana Pentecostal Council, and the Catholic Secretariat among others, could meet to deliberate on enacting a law which will be binding on all of them.
