Ghana: LDS Charities Presents 2 New Boreholes to Refugee Camp

12 September 2003

The humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, LDS Charities, presented to the camp director, John Thompson and the welfare council chairman, Francis Hinnah, two new and functioning boreholes at Buduburam Liberian Refugee Camp.

Samuel S. Nepay, President of the Buduburam Branch of the Church organized and conducted the formal presentation.

Attending the presentation was Moses Ghanem, Ghanco Ghana Ltd., whose company drilled the boreholes. He stated that many drilling companies have tried to find water only to drill a dry well or one where the salinity was too high to be of use.

The two new wells mark the first useful boreholes at the camp. The level of salinity was judged to be low enough that the water used for drinking and cooking.

President Anthony S Nimbey, First Counselor in the Buduburam Branch Presidency, spoke of the love of Christ for mankind is the kind of love demonstrated by LDS Charities in their humanitarian work.

He continued by saying that "today's presentation from The Church and LDS Charities is because of our love for Jesus Christ. The gospel makes us unselfish and willing to be generous to the poor and the needy."

Elder Derl Walker, representing LDS Charities, said "this gift is made possible from donations from many throughout the world.

It will give you the feel of our Savior's love for us. We all need to remember what the Savior said to the woman at the well, that He would give her living water from which she would never thirst." Remember Jesus Christ and His love for us.

In accepting for the Camp, Francis Hinnah said "we are grateful you are helping to lift the burden from us.

On behalf of the Liberians at the Camp, we thank you." Mr. Hinnah said that the camp has grown to 75,000 people. In one week alone, they registered 12,000 new refugees.

John Thompson also expressed his thanks to the members of the Church for their generous donations that makes this great work possible. "We hope that bond of friendship will continue."

Those attending the presentation visited both boreholes and were delighted to see many people filling buckets, tubs and bottles with water from the pumps.
