Nigeria: Assembly Laments Poor State of Hospitals

Kano — The Kano State House of Assembly Committee on health has noticed with displeasure the deplorable condition of specialist hospitals and other health institutions in the state and has called for ther immediate rehabilitation.

This was contained in the committee's report which was presented to the House yesterday by its Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Ibrahim Lajawa, member representing Wudil constituency.

Among the findings of the committee as pointed out by the chairman before the submission of the report, Alhaji Yusuf Lajawa said that almost all the specialist and other hospitals in the state lacked-adequate medical staff, have obsolete equipments, no kitchen utensils, no theatre equipments and broken-down generating sets.

Other identified problems as contained in the report, the chairman added include, inadequate electricity and water supply, lack of enough beddings and mattresses, inadequate drugs and poor ventilation system as well as problem of encroachment on some of the hospital's lands.

The chairman therefore requested the state arm of government to take urgent steps in reversing the ugly trend through effecting general rehabilitation of the hospitals, provision of modern hospital equipment as well as employing adequate medical personnels to enhance healthcare delivery service in the state.

However, some patients interviewed by Kano Trust over the issue at Muhammad Abdullahi specialist hospital lamented the state of neglect of the hospital.

Malam Hauwa Yunusa of Yankaba Quarters told Kano Trust that the surrounding of the hospital's labour room need sanitation as some people are in the habit of urinating behind it.

She added that apart from those problems, nurses in the hospital need to be warned to stop harassing patients or their relations when in hospital under and during labour period.

Another contributor, Malam Muhammad Musa, told Kano Trust that the hospital need government's aid in area like provision of hospital facilities and medical staff.

He explained that the hospital shares one doctor with the Murtala Muhammad specialist hospital, a situation which he said attracts concern from most of the patients.

It will be recalled that the state governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has listed health sector among the eight priority areas of his administration.
