Liberia: EU Spends N1.8b, Earmarks Additional N600m

24 October 2003

Lagos — The European Commission has disbursed N1.2 billion for the upkeep of soldiers in Liberia, while an additional N600 million has been earmarked for food and medical aid in the war torn country.

A statement made available to newsmen in Abuja yesterday and signed by the Euro-pean Union Head of Delegation, Ambassador Leonidas Tezapsidis, said the agreement for the contribution was signed between the EU and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The EC said the grant was part of the Commission's support to ECOWAS, the regional body leading the peace process in Liberia.

The commission said that the funding was, among others essentially for: Payment of the daily allowances, food and water of the soldiers in the ECOWAS Peace Force in Liberia, (ECOMIL), until the United Nations Mission for Liberia, (UNMIL), took over from ECOMIL;

_Financial assistance for the operation of the office of the ECOWAS special representative in Monrovia.

_The sum of N600 million is expected to be paid through the EU's humanitarian aid office, for the provision of medical and food aid and for the repair of water and sanitation facilities in Liberia.
