Kenya: Firm to Offer Expertise On Wealth Declaration

Nairobi — A private organisation is offering to provide information technology and initial expertise in setting up computerised data on declaration of wealth free of charge.

Baroness Lynda Chalker yesterday said the NGO, based in Nigeria had made the offer in realisation of the Kenya Government's commitment to achieve greater integrity in governance.

She said the organisation had assisted Nigeria in setting up a similar measure on business integrity.

Chalker, who is also the chairman of Unilever (Africa), made the remarks when she paid a courtesy call on the Vice-President and Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Moody Awori at his Jogoo House office. Accompanying her was Unilever's Chief Executive in Kenya.

Awori said Kenyans were keen to ensure that the Narc Government achieved the promises it made during the last General Election, including the creation of 500,000 jobs a year.

The V-P said the Jua kali sector, which falls under the small and medium-size micro enterprises, provides jobs to about 50 per cent of Kenya's population and that measures were being taken to provide more incentives to them.

The Government, Awori added, will ensure that measures were put in place to encourage the private sector to flourish.

He said the State's commitment to ending corruption was in full gear adding that the approach in combating the vice had been initiated from the top. He cited the high population in Kenyan prisons as an example of problems that had been caused by graft, attributing the trend to a failed judiciary, which had taken long to be tackled by the Government.
