Nairobi — Rufus Mwangi Kiai was in great form during the weekend, as he beat a field of 84 players, to emerge the overall winner of the annual D. K. Open golf tournament title at Kenya Railway Golf Club.
Kiai who is also a member at Windsor Golf and Country Club and currently playing off handicap 11, posted a total of four over par 76 gross for an excellent 43 points, to take the D.K. Trophy plus a 14 inch colour television.
He double-bogeyed the par three-fourth, and dropped one more shot at the fifth for three over par 21 points in the first nine.
At the back nine, Kiai dropped only one shot at the par three-13th hole to finish the nine with 22 points. He won the event generously sponsored by former club chairman Dickson Karume Kariuki.
"I was hitting the ball straight and putted well save for a few holes" said Kiai who won by a point from Ali Mwanzi.
The former Nairobi deputy mayor Mwanzi, fired 21 points in each nine for 42, to take home the second prize, with Agnes Gathumbi on 37 points, finishing third after beating Maina Kariuki on countback.
Thika Sports Club's Francis Njuguna Thuo was the best guest with 41 points, and Limuru's Sam Karioki who has been picking up a prize in almost every event he has featured, was second on 38 points.
Amos Ngonjo took the gross title with 31 points as former Railway captain George Wakaba and Anthony Muhindi won the nines with 19 and 21 points each.
The sponsor Kariuki who donated the trophy in 1987 and has been supporting the event since then, promised to sponsor the tournament again next year.
* Windsor: Kenya Amateur champion Kopan Timbe fired 42 points during Friday's Getrude Garden Children's Hospital fund-raising tournament to win by five points from Muthaiga's Tim Onyango and Brian Beaupre.
Aruna Shah on 38 points won the ladies prize ahead of Meera Shah on 36 and the nines went to Nancy Ndungu on 23 and John Cokayne also with 23 points, and J. Dowd won the Piga Mingi with seven points.
Timbe who is currently leading in the 2003 Golfer of the Year series, also the nearest to pin prize and led his team to claim the team prize with a score of 103 points.
The longest drive prize went to S. R. Ndegwa for the men and the ladies winner was Ineke Burnett. Peter Coombes meanwhile holed in one at the par three-17th hole.
