Johannesburg — THERE are moments in the evolution of human consciousness that take us to new levels of awareness. One such moment was when Galileo showed that the Earth revolved around the sun and not the other way round.

We know how he was forced by the church to recant on pain of death. We also know that he was ultimately proved right. The lesson this story holds for us is that we can never be sure of the extent of our blindness at any particular moment. This realisation should make us more humble and it should teach us to actively accommodate the notion that the world may not always be what it seems to be.
