Kenya: Library Plan for Prisons

Nairobi — The Government will soon establish libraries in all prisons in the country.

Vice-President Moody Awori said libraries would enable warders and prisoners to advance their education.

He made the remarks when he toured Manyani Maximum Prison in Taita Taveta District yesterday.

The VP pointed out that warders and inmates were willing to further their education but lacked sufficient materials.

Awori also said the Government would ensure that cases were heard on time.

Awori was reacting to claims by a prisoner, Mr Francis Suranira, that he appealed eight years ago yet nothing had been done.

Suranira had asked the VP to intervene to have his case heard. Awori assured him that all pending appeals would soon be heard.

During the tour Awori promoted the Manyani prisons boss Patrick Mwenda to Assistant Commissioner of Prisons. He had been a Senior Superintendent of Prisons.

The VP donated a television set to the prisoners as part of the reforms being undertaken by the Government.

He said that Narc Government was committed to improve the welfare of prisoners and warders.

The VP was accompanied by ministers Karisa Maitha, Linah Kilimo and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs Mr Sylvester Mwaliko.
