Cameroon: Sharing with Prisoners' Children

Kids of inmates of the Buéa Central prison were offered Christmas presents last Friday.

With Christmas at hand, Prison Fellowship Cameroon lit a Christmas tree and offered gifts to children of prisoners at the Buea Central Prison Hall 19th December. The 'Angel Tree' brightened with light as Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF) groups of Buea Station and Buea Prison sang, drummed and danced to grace the occasion as gifts in cash and kind poured in. Gifts in kind included pieces of soap, bed sheets, clothes, toilet rolls, pens, oil, garri, rice The best well-behaved prisoner was also awarded a prize.

Responding to the gifts, Mrs. Nana Abunaw Marie, Board Chairperson of Prison Fellowship Cameroon and Administrator General of Prisons, said the gifts were relieving, comforting and a source of joy to innocent children who should not be victims of their parents' crime. She reminded the donors that giving to the poor is responding to the teachings of Jesus Christ when He said, "When I was in Prison, you took care of me". Instilling hope into prisoners, Dr. Ndeley Litombe, representative of FakoShip, urged prisoners to keep hope alive, "for you are a prisoner today and can tomorrow become a great man. After all we are all prisoners in disguise".

The activities of Prison Fellowship Cameroon were lauded when Dr. Ndeley said, "We are respected as a society because of the type of care we give to prisoners. Show me your prisons and I will know the type of country you belong to and the people you are". Prison Fellowship Cameroon introduces the 'Angel Tree' to convert prisoners to Christ through Bible Studies, reformation and rehabilitation lectures. Despite Prison Fellowship Cameroon's multifarious achievements, the organisation needs volunteers who should be assisted in funding since its permanent Board Members are not remunerated, Mrs. Nana Abunaw Marie appealed.
