Bamenda — One of the situations that give a lot of headache to both administrative and traditional rulers in the North West Province is the rampant cases of land disputes which have often led to bloody confrontations and loss of lives and property.
In commissioning 49 year-old Gonou Gabriel as the new Divisional Officer for Bamenda Central Division, on the Commercial Avenue, Mankon, November 4, the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Mezam Division Sandji Robertson Tado, cautioned him, as the future chairman of the land consultative board, to be objective and act without fear or favour, by ensuring that justice prevails. He also called on the population to respect decisions and rulings taken by competent authorities on these matters.
After giving a rich academic and professional profile of the new Divisional Officer, Mr. Sandji Tado reminded him of some of his duties which devolve on ensuring peace and public order; to ensure the economic and social growth of the population. For him to succeed in his onerous tasks, the SDO told him to be objective in all his actions, to fight the rising crime wave in the Sub-Division by setting up vigilante groups in the quarters to assist in security matters. He was also reminded to ensure that registration of votes is done in an organised and transparent manner. He therefore called on the population of voting age to register for elections. He further called on population to give the new D.O. all possible cooperation.
Earlier in his welcome speech, the Assistant Government Delegate to the Bamenda urbain Council, Alhadji Salifou Njikam Kansen, who echoed the SDO's worries about the rampant land disputes in the Sub-Division, observed that the population feels hurt because apart from the official inspection fees for land matters, the population find it hard and difficult, to meet with the ever increasing and unjustified levies imposed on them by members of the land consultative board.
While observing that the Bamenda man is a peaceful, law abiding and loving person, he is very conscious of his rights and civic obligations.
He paid tribute to the outgoing D.O. Mr. Kamgs Charles, who has been transferred to Fundong Sub-Division, in the same capacity. He promised the population's cooperate with the new Administrator, who hails from Fondjomekwet in Banja Sub-Division in the West Province.
