Uganda: Genetically Modified Foods in Circulation

Kampala — Agriculture minister Dr. Kisamba Mugerwa has confirmed that foodstuffs from Genetically Modified Seeds (GMS) have already penetrated Uganda's market but the seeds themselves are not yet here.

Mugerwa said in an interview on Wednesday that such food had been imported in the country by the business community and some was brought in by donors.

He said, "I want to assure Ugandans that we do not have GMS yet but if they come in as foodstuffs, there is no way the government can control that."

He gave an example of Soya beans, saying any imported products from Soya beans are from GMS.

He called for the speeding up of the national biotechnology and bio-safety policies so that they are in place by the end of this financial year.
