Kenya: Matatus Fail Traffic Test

13 January 2004

Nairobi — Only 23 matatus in Nairobi have complied with the new traffic rules introduced by the Transport and Communication minister John Michuki.

The officer in charge of Nairobi Motor Vehicle Inspection Unit, Mr Abdalla Yusuf, said only three vehicles (lorries) whose tare weight exceeded 3,048 kg had been fitted with speed governors.

Speaking by telephone, Yusuf said most matatus taken for inspection last week had been fitted with seat belts but not speed governors.

Yusuf said most matatu owners had painted the yellow strip on their vehicles.

According to the new traffic rule, Public Service Vehicle (PSV) owners are expected to paint their matatus and taxis with a yellow band of 150mm in width. The band should be clearly visible by day at a distance of not less than 275 metres.

The 23 vehicles had their inspection reports endorsed by the vehicle inspector that they had complied with the legal notice.

The reports are to be presented to the Transport Licensing Board members to be given routes.

Some of the matatu owners whose vehicles were turned away said the cost of speed governors was too high.
