Nairobi — The Presbyterian Church of East Africa will call countrywide demonstrations if the Ufungamano draft constitution is rejected at Bomas.
The moderator, Dr David Githii, said the church's 3.5 million followers would spill onto the streets to push for the recognition of the draft. The faithful, he added, were ready to die for the country.
The draft was superior to the Bomas document since it was a product of prayer and fellowship.
"Unlike the Bomas draft, the Ufungamano document resulted from prayer and fellowship," he said.
He said the Bomas proposals were unviable because they were inspired by hunger for power.
"The draft has no spine as it is a product of emotions, accusations and counter-accusations," he said.
Speaking in Karatina Town, Nyeri, yesterday, Githii said the document, released recently by Constitution of Kenya Review Commission chairman Yash Pal Ghai, was a recipe for chaos and disorder.
"The Bomas III document is as a result of emotions . . . it is unethical and a product of a chaotic debate."
He said the shouting down and booing of delegates was a clear indication that nothing good would come out of the conference.
Githii was officiating at a church meeting attended by moderators of six presbyteries of the Mount Kenya region.
He said Kadhi's courts should not be in the draft constitution because Kenyans wanted to free themselves from religious bias.
He recommended that all drafts be tabled at Bomas and studied critically for delegates to come up with a final document, which should be subjected to a referendum before it was adopted.
The church wanted executive powers to be vested on a person popularly elected by Kenyans.
The church, he added, was not leaning on any side of the political divide, but wanted divergent views accommodated in the final draft.
The chairman of the National Council of Churches of Kenya, Central Region, the Rev Charles Ndanyu, said the mood at Bomas was not conducive to serious constitution making.
At one point in the constitution making process, said Githii, experts should be involved to polish the draft.
It was unfortunate that the Bomas conference had been turned into a battlefield, with combatants focused on the 2007 General Election.
