Nigeria: Foundation Offers Scholarships to Gifted Students

Lagos — In its bid to lend a helping hand and bring succour to financially poor but gifted students, Mike Okonkwo Foundation (MOF) will be giving out some Scholarship awards to identified billiant but indigent students of some tertiary institutions in the country on February 14 , at Yawdah Hall, Trem Headquarters, Lagos. It would also on that day graduate 100 students of its Vocational Training Centre.

The 100 graduating students of the training centre underwent a three- month- free vocational training in barbing, hair weaving and soap making. Apart from offering free vocational training in different professions, Mike Okonkwo Foundation also runs a free adult literacy class and a free preparatory class for JAMB, NECO and WAEC candidates.

Since its establishment in September, 2000, the Mike Okonkwo Foundation has undertaken some community-based projects like the establishment of functional vocation training centres in Agege and Mushin for youths to acquire skills for survival; donation of 40 wheel chairs to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), General Hospital, Lagos, National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.

Other socially responsible activities of the Foundation were the establishment and provision of scholarship schemes for financially poor but gifted students/children, promotion of public lectures to stimulate new perspectives for social change in the society and the provision of life saving pamphlets and information on health related issues.

Currently, the Mike Okonkwo Foundation was embarking on the process of providing schemes that will assist elderly members of the society and the provision of other social amenities to needy communities in the country.

The Foundation has Dr. Erastus Akingbola, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Intercontinental Bank Plc, as Chairman, and Dr. Nkiru-Nzegwu Danjuma serves as its Vice-Chairman. Other Members of the Board of Trustees are Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, Mr. F.0 Adetola, Mrs. Nkechi Akubuiro, Mr. Alfred Amobi, Dr. (Mrs.) Omare Bisong, Mr. Tabunor Ogedegbe and Mrs. Oluwayomi Uteh , who is the Secretary.
