South Africa: SA Students Doing Well in Cuba

Kimberley — The Department of Health in the Northern Cape has welcomed as impressive a report about the academic performance of 16 youths who left the province last year to study medicine in Cuba.

This in a programme between the governments of Cuba and South Africa.

After completing their studies, these students are expected back in the province to work, especially in rural areas, as part the government's plan of placing skilled health care personnel in rural areas.

Spokesperson Thabo Lekhu said the 16 students were doing well, which was a wise investment government had made.

"The report indicates that all 16 students are among the majority of South Africans who are rated high on their class discipline and it further states that they pay more attention to detail in class," Mr Lekhu said.

"Cuba is a reputable country when it comes to its health science education; Cuban doctors in our country are a clear example of how good is that revolutionary island republic's education system especially in health sciences," he added.

The first student to leave to that country through this programme was Ms Mapitso Bonokwane from Kuruman in 2000.

Ms Mapitso will visit South Africa for the first time in July for a four-week holiday since she left.

"It should be noted that these students come from poor backgrounds and will come back and uplift the living standards of their families towards eradicating poverty," Mr Lekhu said.
