Nigeria: Health NGO Launched in Lagos

Lagos — Child Health Advocacy Group (CHAG) a non-governmental organisation has been launched in Lagos.

The organisation's vision is to improve the health of Nigerian children through child survival and development activities.

Recently, the organisation took Massey Children's Hospital as a project and donated hospital beddings along with information and educational textbooks on childcare.

In a statement signed by CHAG director of programmes, Mrs. Lola Alonge and made available to THISDAY, the organisation has worked out modalities to achieve an increased awareness on the importance of essential nutrients such as Vitamin 'A' to children below five years, increasing childhood immunisation rate and the use of life-saving vaccines as well improving the knowledge of pregnant women, nursing mothers for the purpose of safety and hygiene.

She further stressed the need for an aggressive campaign to educate and inform mothers on the importance of immunisation programme, family planning method and antenatal care, she said.

Alonge further explained that CHAG would also sensitise and increase awareness in order to eradicate hunger and malnutrition through exclusive breastfeeding campaign method, safe motherhood, childbirth and the support of children orphaned and those living with HIV/AIDS.

To achieve the set objectives, the programme director said "through the mass media such as television, radio, billboards and newspapers, we will sensitise and increase awareness of child health issues such as immunisation, nutrition, hygiene, safe motherhood and HIV/AIDS."

She said that workshops and seminars would be held simultaneously to enlighten pregnant women and nursing mothers on the importance and benefits of family planning and antenatal care.

"It is of utmost importance for Nigerians to embrace family planning method and immunisation in order to alleviate poverty and child abuse, " she said.
