Angola: Family Ministry Wants Greater Participation of Women in Social Projects

Luanda — Angolan Ministry of Family and Promotion of Women (MINAFAMU) wants a greater participation of women in social projects, mainly in programmes of education, health and culture.

These opinion, was expressed last weekend, at Cazenga district, in Luanda, by the national Director for family policy of MINFAMU, Maria das Dores, when she discoursed, at a seminar, under a theme "The role of women in the Angolan society".

For the responsible, in the education sector there is a high number of women of low level since the independence of Angola, in the year 1975. From the 80 percent of the population, 60 percent were illiterate women.

She emphasized that in the health sector, the situation is worrying, because there still exists chilbirth deaths and the HIV/AIDS issue which affects a lot of pregnant women, youths and children, to what she stressed the need of finding mechanisms to solve this dramatic situation.

The considered the state of women in the Angolan society as "very difficult, stating that some churches and NGOs have been carrying out sensibilization campaigns and trainings as a main methods to aid women in the fight for their emancipation.

"We have to fight to defend ourselves from the 30 percent in governing. The Heads of States commited themselves to insert women in posts of charge", Maria das Dores.

The event, promoted by the Angolan Women's Organisation (O.M.A), is part of the programme of festivities of the 2nd and 8th of March, national and international women's days, respectively.

The seminar aimed at informing women in general about their rights in the development of gender, equity and opportunities.

This event was attended, by different entities, among them representatives of civil society, business and religious NGOs.
