THE Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI) yesterday launched an urban outreach project in Matero township to empower vulnerable and under-privileged groups.

Speaking at the function, First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa said the project was deliberately tailored to favour female and child headed families.

She said MMCI had identified 150 households from the six zones for the first phase for the period of about six months after which another group of 150 families would be fed and empowered.

She said that during the period of receiving food, beneficiaries would be trained to run small businesses and exploit their potential.

The First Lady said MMCI would also sensitise the beneficiaries on various issues of HIV/AIDS, health, alcohol abuse and child rights.

"It must be emphasised that this project is not a hand-out project but a project aimed at uplifting the living standards of the vulnerable groups.

Mrs Mwanawasa also called for corporate organisations to assist the MMCI run the programme which called for minimum investment of K500,000.

She said the programme was being implemented with the support of the World Food Programme which provides food and other logistics for the project.
