Pretoria — Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad will launch the disability awareness campaign in Johannesburg, later today.
The campaign is under the stewardship of the Office on the Status of Disabled Persons (OSDP) in the Presidency and is funded by the Flemish government.
The OSDP said the national campaign was targeted at sensitising the general public, in particular employers and the media, on issues of disability.
"The objective of this project is for an increased and focused media campaign in radio, TV and print mediums and the visual and performing arts programme that will highlight the positive and meaningful role that persons with disabilities play in building our society in general," the OSDP said.
It said the media campaign would raise awareness amongst persons with disabilities on relevant government policies and programmes as well as contribute to changing attitudes on disability issues.
"It will also contribute in enabling persons with disabilities to recognise and exercise their rights," added the OSDP.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with various government departments and civil society organisations of disabled people.
It seeks to achieve specific objectives amongst disabled people including increasing public awareness of the socio-economic potential and the human rights and dignity of the latter as well as increasing their awareness of government services.
