Nigeria: NGLUG Takes Linux to UNILAG

Lagos — The Nigerian Linux Users Group (NGLUG) has taken Linux technology to University of Lagos, as the group network and installed the necessary software using Linux and open source technology.

Director NGLUG, Mr. Owen Iyoha, said the project is part of its humanitarian projects planned to be executed in Nigeria's tertiary institutions, and an effort towards the propagation of Linux and open source technology.

He stated that NGLUG decided to use universities in its effort to propagate this the because of the influence they have over their students as well as their role in training of people in Information Technology.

"Exposing students to Linux will help in propagating the technology," he added.

Mr. Iyoha added that Linux and open technology is a cost effective way of bridging the digital divide as it lays foundation for people to build solutions on. Noting that the technology cuts across the whole spectrum of Information Technology. This according to him form the basis for companies like Oracle, IBM and Novell supporting Linux.

Director, University of Lagos, Computer Centre, Dr. Charles Uwadia, said the centre decided to introduce Linux as a way of diversifying as well as equip her students to be able to face challenges that may emerge after their graduation from the institution.

He pointed out that Linux and open source technology is cheaper, more secured, flexible and without license.

Dr. Uwadia, disclosed that the centre and NGLUG are collaborating in the introduction of a certificate course in Linux and Lunis, with a bit network administration in the centre. According to him, NGLUG is to provide the resource personnel while the centre provide the other infrastructure required for the course to start.

NGLUG is a body for users of Linux operating system and supporters of open source software for its computing and information technology needs. The group has facilitated the development of our society by working on IT projects, which include Online facilities for .ng domain name registration, development of e-mail systems for tertiary institutions among others.
