Uganda: Uganda, to Export Chimps

Walter Akwat

24 April 2004

Kampala — THE Government will go ahead to send the three chimpanzees that have of recent generated a lot of controversy to China.

The Minister of Tourism, Trade and industry, Edward Rugumayo, said that the chimps were "a gift to a friendly nation."

Rugumayo was on Thursday appearing before the Parliamentary committee of tourism, trade and industry chaired by Margaret Ateng-Otim (Women Lira).

State minister for industry Richard Nduhuura and several officials from the ministry accompanied him.

Rugumayo said people had misunderstood the motive behind the bilateral gesture to the people of China. He said China had contributed enormously to the development of Uganda.

"We are going to send a team to China to see the future home of the chimps," he said.

Ateng-Otim said it would be good if the committee saw the future home of the chimps.
