Zambia: Nesawu Opposes Kariba De-Linkage

Times Reporter

29 April 2004

THE National Energy Sector and Allied Workers Union (NESAWU) has lashed out at the planned de-linkage of the Kariba North Bank (KNB) from ZESCO.

NESAWU president Peter Chupa said in Ndola yesterday that the country's weak economy could not sustain further competition in the electricity sector.

He said the de-linkage would serve only to push up the tariffs which would consequently cause closure of industries and hurt citizens.

Mr Chupa said ZESCO was strategic in the country's economy, hence the union's support for the commercialisation and not privatisation of the company by unbundling it into smaller units.

He argued that the repercussions would include uncontrolled tariffs even with the Energy Regulations Board (ERB) in place.
