Nairobi — Former Sri Lankan Test player Charith Senanayake has been appointed the head coach of the Coast Combined cricket team set to play in an invitational triangular tournament in Mahe, Seychelles, next month.
Coast Cricket Association (CCA) chairman Sameer Inamdar said yesterday that the Sri Lankan has been given the task of preparing the combined team.
"We believe Senanayake's experience in international matches is an added advantage to our team and much is expected from him," said Inamdar in an interview.
The Mahe tournament will bring together the Coast Combined side, Mauritius and hosts Seychelles and will run from June 13 to 28.
The triangular tournament will be part of the celebrations lined up to mark the country's Independence Day.
Inamdar said the team will comprise 14 players and four officials. Association's treasurer Subhash Devani has been appointed the Tour Manager. Team doctor and head of delegation will be named in due course.
The chairman said the final squad will be named at the end of the month, saying the team is scheduled to jet out on June 13. The host have catered for the visitors' internal expenses.
The combined team was boosted by Sports Minister Najib Balala last month when he donated Sh 100,000 to the association to adequately prepare the team.
The Sri Lankan is expected to draw up his training programme this weekend when he will call players for trials. Training venues are likely to be Mombasa and Coast Gymkhana Sports Clubs.
