Jos — Peace initiatives aimed at finding lasting peace in crisis-torn Plateau South may suffer a set back as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has passed a vote of no confidence on the chairman of the Presidential Peace Committee (PPP), Alhaji Shehu Idris, the Emir of Zaria.

Chairman of CAN in Plateau State, Rev. Yakubu Pam stated this at an interaction with newsmen in Jos, noting that the collective resolve of the body was to seek peace and pursue it whole-heartedly, but said the Emir's choice was not going to represent the interest of the group.

His words: "While we commend President Obasanjo's concern in finding solution to the unending crises in Plateau, we take a swift exception on the composition of the Presidential Peace Committee under the chairmanship of the Emir of Zaria. His leadership style is totally unacceptable to us."

He stated that Idris has direct relationship with the Emir of Wase, who has already been linked to the crises in the state, saying "We believe he who comes to equity must come with clean hand." Similarly, the National Secretary of CAN, Mr. Samuel Salifu, who spoke on behalf of the national president, noted that it was unfair to make a muslim the chairman of a committee over a 90 per cent Christian population.
