Sierra Leone: Anger Over President's Proposed Appointments

Freetown — Party stalwarts in the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party are unhappy over the proposed appointments of some people who served in the All Peoples Congress the arch-political rival of the party.

President Kabbah's planned appointment has been described by many who have had foreknowledge of it as another big blunder again.

According to reliable sources in the SLPP, the president is about to give appointments to people who they say during their previous tenure of offices have not proved their mettle.

Sources point out Foday Yumkella's appointment as deputy high commissioner to the UK as one. Foday recently woefully lost paramount chieftaincy election in Samu chiefdom, Kambia District, north west of the country. Paramount chief elections are for traditional rulers. Foday comes from a traditional ruling family.

He resigned his job as minister of presidential affairs to contest the traditional ruling elections.

But Foday is reported not to be happy with the appointment as he was expecting to get full ambassadorial post. He is reported to have complained that it is a demotion since he had served as minister of presidential affairs previously.

Another appointment that has invoked anger even among SLPP stalwarts is that of Sheku Momoh Sesay former minister of energy and power in Late Joseph Saidu Momoh's regime. Sheku Sesay became notorious for callousness. He was usually seen buying chicken to feed his dog every day in his office while people queued for rice. It created widespread anger against him at the time.
