Lagos — Over 200 members of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) belonging to different groups within the union clashed at the ports last week in which six people with serious injuries were hospitalised.
The incident occurred between Thursday and Friday as a result of the allegation by members of the Moon and Star Forum of Nigeria, who claimed that they were suspended from their jobs by the union.
Chairman of the forum, Comrade Oladapo Stephen, told THISDAY that his members were attacked on Thursday because they took the matter of their suspension from duty to the Joint Maritime Industrial Labour (JOMALIC).
The group went to JOMALIC with a lorry load of its members seeking to see the Chairman of JOMALIC, Alhaji Tijjani Ramalan, on Wednesday, for his intervention.
They called for the removal of the President-General of the MWUN, Comrade Onikalese Irabor, and Comrade S. Bakare.
Stephen alleged that after the visit to JOMALIC, the leadership of the union used thugs to harass members, who were identified as having taken part in the visit to the dock labour regulatory body.
President-General of the MWUN, who was also at JOMALIC on the request of JOMALIC Chairman, told THISDAY that no member of the union was suspended from his job.
